Large-format tiles (any side 15" or longer) need a large-and-heavy-tile mortar and a flat floor. Check the flatness tolerance on the box.

Without grout joints. The calculator includes the joint you choose, which slightly lowers the count.

Measuring walls and backsplashes

  • Walls: width × height of each wall, minus windows and doors.
  • Backsplash: length of the counter run × height from countertop to the bottom of the upper cabinets (often about 18 inches).
  • Shower: add each wall separately and the floor, which often uses a different, smaller tile.

Quick answers

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?

Find the area in square feet, convert it to square inches (× 144) and divide by the area of one tile plus its grout joint. Then add 10% for cuts and breakage, or 15–20% for diagonal and herringbone layouts.

How many 12×24 tiles do I need for 100 square feet?

Each 12 × 24 tile covers 2 sq ft, so 100 sq ft needs 50 tiles (a few less once grout joints are counted). With 10% extra, buy 55 tiles.

What size grout joint should I use?

Rectified tiles with straight edges can use joints as narrow as 1/16"–1/8". Non-rectified tiles and natural stone usually need 3/16"–1/4" to absorb size variation. Check the tile maker's recommendation on the box.

Should I buy extra tile?

Yes. Besides the waste for cuts, keep a few spare tiles from the same lot for future repairs. Discontinued tiles and different production lots are very hard to match later.
