How it works Formula, reference tables and pro tips

How the fence calculator works

  • Sections = fence length ÷ post spacing, rounded up.
  • Posts = sections + 1 (for a straight run).
  • Rails = 2 per section on fences up to 5 ft tall, 3 per section on taller fences.
  • Boards = length in inches ÷ (board width + gap).
  • Concrete = hole volume minus the post, divided by the 0.375 cu ft a 50 lb bag of fast-setting mix yields.

Actual lumber sizes

Lumber is sold by nominal size, which is larger than the real board. Use the actual width in the calculator.

NominalActual
1 × 43/4" × 3 1/2"
1 × 63/4" × 5 1/2"
2 × 4 (rail)1 1/2" × 3 1/2"
4 × 4 (post)3 1/2" × 3 1/2"
6 × 6 (post)5 1/2" × 5 1/2"

Before you dig

  • Call 811 a few days before digging. It is free and marks buried gas, power and water lines.
  • Check your property line, HOA rules and local height limits (often 6 ft in back yards and 3–4 ft in front).
  • Use ground-contact rated pressure-treated posts.
  • Set corner and end posts first, then run a string line to align the posts in between.

Quick answers

How many fence posts do I need?

Divide the fence length by the post spacing and round up to get the number of sections, then add one. A straight 100 ft fence with posts every 8 ft has 13 sections and 14 posts. Add a post for each gate and each extra corner.

How far apart should fence posts be?

Eight feet on center is the standard for wood fences because rails come in 8 ft lengths. Use 6 ft spacing for taller privacy fences in windy areas or for heavier materials.

How deep should fence posts be?

A common target is at least 2 feet and at least a third of the post above ground, but the real rule is your frost line: in cold climates posts must go below it or frost will heave them. Check your local building department.

How many bags of concrete per fence post?

For a 4×4 post in a 10 inch hole that is 2 ft deep, Quikrete says about two 50 lb bags of Fast-Setting Concrete Mix. Wider or deeper holes take more: a 12 inch hole 30 inches deep takes about five bags.

How many pickets do I need?

Convert the fence length to inches and divide by the board width plus the gap. A 100 ft privacy fence of 1×6 boards (5.5 inches actual) needs 219 boards.
