How it works Formula, reference tables and pro tips

The cubic yard formula

Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27

For a circle, use 3.1416 × radius² instead of length × width. For a triangle, use base × height ÷ 2.

Quick answers

How do I calculate cubic yards?

Multiply length × width × depth, all in feet, to get cubic feet, then divide by 27. If the depth is in inches, divide it by 12 first. Example: 10 ft × 10 ft × 4 in = 10 × 10 × 0.333 = 33.3 cu ft ÷ 27 = 1.23 cubic yards.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

Exactly 27. A yard is 3 feet, so a cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. That is about 0.765 cubic meters.

How many square feet does a cubic yard cover?

It depends on the depth: 324 sq ft at 1 inch, 162 at 2 inches, 108 at 3 inches, 81 at 4 inches and 54 at 6 inches.

Is a yard of material the same as a ton?

No. A yard measures volume and a ton measures weight. A yard of gravel weighs around 1.4 tons, a yard of topsoil around 1.1 tons, and a yard of mulch much less. Pick a material in the calculator to see the weight.
